Honghi Tran obtained his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Ceramic Engineering from Shizuoka University in Japan, and received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1982. He worked as a Senior Research Scientist for Douglas Reeve & Associates in Toronto for 5 years before returning to the University of Toronto in 1987. Tran has been a Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry since 1994, and is presently Director of the Pulp & Paper Centre at the University of Toronto.
Professor Tran has made numerous contributions to the pulp and paper industry in the area of kraft chemical recovery, through his application of fundamental research results to the solutions of practical problems. He has been a pioneer in various R&D efforts, such as fireside deposit formation and removal in recovery boilers, high temperature corrosion, borate autocausticizing, and ring formation in lime kilns. These efforts have resulted in new technology and procedures, including the prediction of deposit first melting and sticky temperatures, the development of the fully-expanded sootblower jet concept which became the basis for the high-performance sootblower nozzles used in most recovery boilers today, and mill-scale applications of borate autocausticizing technology.
Professor Tran has served as a technical consultant to over 50 companies on various problems including fouling and corrosion in recovery boilers, bark boilers and municipal solid waste incinerators, ringing and ID fan scaling in lime kilns, particulate and gaseous (TRS, SO2 and NOx) emissions from various types of combustion units, and chemical balance in kraft pulp mills.
