About

Mark Kortschot is a Professor and is Associate Chair of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto. He obtained his B.A.Sc. (1984) and M.A.Sc.(1985) degrees in the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, specializing in mechanics and materials science. He then went to Cambridge University as a Commonwealth Scholar and obtained his Ph.D. in 1989.

Professor Kortschot is interested in the relationship between microstructure and material properties, with particular emphasis on the strength and fracture toughness of fibrous materials such as long and short fibre reinforced polymers and paper.  His research is a mixture of experimental and theoretical approaches. He has published more than 60 papers in refereed journals, and has many conference presentations and other scholarly addresses. Professor Kortschot is the former Chair of the Tappi Paper Physics Committee, the international body for scientists and engineers interested in the structure and properties of paper.

Professor Kortschot provides advice on the structure and performance of polymers, composites, and wood based materials. He provides forensic failure analysis of plastic pipes, panels, films and tanks in support of insurance claims and litigation. He provides specialized testing and analysis services including unconventional mechanical property testing, and detailed structural analysis based on light and electron microscopy. Professor Kortschot is also available to provide advice on SR&ED tax claims, and on patents related to his fields of expertise.
